WIRED’s May 2015 issue featured Skrillex as its cover star, so we were asked to create a cover that would let the reader interact with audio.
We were given a track by Skrillex which began on launch. We created an audio effects panel, which is revealed by swiping once the initial coverline animation has finished playing. The panel allows the reader to add effects to the track by touching and dragging an XY pad, and also features a pitch control slider and a coloured frequency meter that analyses the outputted sound.
The sound was generated using the Web Audio API, which meant we could process and alter the signal in realtime.
The reader has a choice of four effects: Peak Filter, Phaser, High Pass Filter and Delay. The position of the touch on the XY pad linked up to different parameters of the effects (e.g. for the High Pass Fitler, X and Y are the Cutoff and Resonance).
