AGAINST THE GRAIN THEATRE

“The future of opera.”
− Alexander Neef, General Director, Canadian Opera Company

Since 2010 award-winning Canadian opera company Against the Grain Theatre has been producing daring re-interpretations of classical repertoire in nontraditional spaces — courtyards, bars, Victorian mansions, wedding halls — and with scaled-back accompaniment, such as a string quartet or piano, to bring out the full force of operatic singing in close quarters. The result? A thrilling, intimate, and unforgettable experience.

In 2015 Against the Grain Theatre commissioned Acme to redesign their visual identity, print and digital materials including a new website and creative collateral for two critically-acclaimed shows: Death and Desire and ATG's Messiah.

Formula for the new logo…
Playing with references to wood grain, soundwaves, vinyl grooves and the letterform 'O' (for 'opera') a simple circular device became the seed for infinite variations of 'bent' logomarks — a riff on the fluid nature of the company, which performs unconventional productions in unconventional spaces.
