"Alat" Salt Food Typography

Project Trofigraphy is a personal project where I will be creating different typography designs using food. The project name came from the greek words trofi meaning "food," and graphia meaning "to write."

For the 2nd phase of this project, I decided to work on "definitions." Specifically, I want to work on typography involving words which have double meanings mostly in the context of Filipino colloquial language. Filipinos are very creative when it comes to communicating to other people; this is one of the main reasons why the Filipino language has been evolving ever since.

Here's the 2nd entry for this phase: "alat," which is salty in English.

"Alat" is a very common taste in the Filipino taste palette. It is the taste of salt, of dried fish, of sweat. Alternatively, Filipinos also use the term to express that they are currently in an unfortunate situation, usually not because of anyone's fault.

Translation of copy:
1. A kind of taste, the taste of salt, dried fish, etc.; This dish I cooked tastes really salty.
2. to be unlucky; I feel like I am unlucky. #BadVibes
