News and Documentary

I have a bit of a love / hate relationship with news and documentary items.  Compared to doing dramatic work, you never have enough time for a second or third take while you're shooting and there's never enough or the right cover while you're cutting the story together--especially if someone else shot it.  But still there's a rush that comes from capturing a story live while it happens and the adrenaline rush that you get when the desk tosses a story that someone else shot on your desk with 45 minutes to air is exhilarating.

And so, with that in mind, here's a variety of pieces that I have worked on.  Some I shot but did not edit, some I edited but did not shoot, and some I did both on.  For all of them, there was a tight timeline.
A story that I edited (but did not shoot) for CBC News - The National.
A story that I edited (but did not shoot) for CBC News Saskatchewan.
A story that I shot (but did not edit) for University of Saskatchewan Communications.
This is a story that I shot and edited for CBC News Saskatchewan.  Stories like this are fun to put together--lots of movement and live music make for dynamic storytelling.
This is a story that I shot and edited for CBC News Saskatchewan.  This is actually a perfect example of the love relationship that I have with news and documentary work.  Devin Heroux, the reporter in this piece, brings an infectious passion to his work.  We'll often take our pieces right up to the final minutes before broadcast, shooting and collecting footage and he never leaves me enough time to edit.  But there's something substantially rewarding about doing the news with him, in particular when we cover human rights like in this piece.
A sad story that I shot and edited for CBC News Saskatchewan about a yearly vigil being held for a missing woman in Saskatoon.  It was made a bit more challenging by our main interview subject being deaf--her son translated for her.
A story I shot and edited for CBC News Saskatchewan.  This story actually capped off a stretch of about two weeks where it seemed like I was constantly shooting weather-related disasters.  This is my favourite story of the bunch--if only because you can still see the wind attacking this small town.  The radio reporter we were travelling with almost got blown off the sidewalk at one point.
A story that I shot and edited for CBC News Saskatchewan.  Often when we cover accidents, particularly fatal ones, we get there well after the fact unless they happen right during our shift.  This accident occurred the day before we shot it and so much of the mess had been cleaned up--leaving only sad fragments of lives lost scattered in a ditch.
I shot most of the footage for this story but did not edit it.  I didn't shoot the black and white "flashback" footage but I did shoot the rest.  I am growing to enjoy shooting live music events--they allow you to play and take chances that you wouldn't be able to on a "normal" news shoot.

A story that I shot and edited for CBC News Saskatchewan.  This story was one of the more enjoyable news shoots I've ever been on.  An early start, a long day, and plenty of driving were made up for by being able to sample all of the delicious food along the way.
A controversial story that I shot and edited for CBC News Saskatchewan.  This is a story that would have been better served in a longer format than what we were allowed to do here.  We ended up presenting one side of a story that very clearly had multiple views of the truth.  Sadly, we had to keep it to two minutes and so chose to concentrate on her side of the story only.
