Inspiration
For this project, I was challenged to redesign the CD, case, and booklet for the band of our choosing. I chose The Colourist's title album, and was inspired by the heavy layering and interweaving of vocal harmonies, dynamic range, and the indie nature of the songs.
The Case
I started by creating my own template for a digipack in Adobe Illustrator. My overall design required allowing the booklet to show through the front, so I designed my case with this in mind.
I used a laser cutter to cut out the band's name and a window that reveals the booklet beneath on watercolor paper. I also used the laser cutter to create score marks to aid in folding the case and etched on the information on the back of the case.
The Booklet
The booklet is the true cornerstone of this product design. Inspired by the musical layering within the album, I chose to represent that through layered, woven-like designs in bold colors. By creating a window in the case, I was able to let the layered booklet show through and become part of the case design.
In order to create this effect, I had to carefully create a template that would allow me to cut out the designs in the window while still using the bottom half of the booklet to show the lyrics for each song. After printing out the booklet using a duplex printer, I then used a laser cutter to cut out the design I made in Illustrator.
