Requiem for Love
Born into this world with little to no hope for their future- these are the young girls of the lower caste families in India. Known as Devadasi these girls are married or ‘dedicated’ to the Yellama god and to a local temple.
As young as 13, they are initiated and by the age of 15 their virginity is sold by their families to the highest community bidder. Soon after, they become available to any man with the right amount of cash in the village. Their life is full of hopelessness and direction. Lost in this old tradition they linger. Although the practice is illegal, there are nearly 23,000 girls still dedicated at this time.
