This project is a hypothetical cover design for Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) Magazine. The project involved researching and presenting an assigned historical typeface as a feature of the magazine. I researched Caroline Minuscule, created in the 8th century by order of Charlemagne, King of the Franks and Rome's very first emperor. The typeface was developed by scribes in scriptoria, special rooms in medieval monasteries reserved for book copying. Caroline Minuscule served as the foundation of the lowercase letters we use today.
For the cover design, I created an image that placed Caroline Minuscule in its historical context. I assembled and stained my props by hand and shot the photograph in candle light.
