The marketplace is situated in the heart of the new planned residential district. In contrast to the typical marketplace typology in Wroclaw, our competition entry is designed as an extrovert urban space, a kind of covered city public square which is linked to the surrounding recreational green areas.
We liked the idea of not being confined to fixed market stalls and enable the people to trade how and where they want. We came up with the idea of these outdoor trolleys which are joined together like shopping trolleys to encourage people to tidy them away when they stop using the square. The invented system is introducing a new model of trading which requires users to unblock and release a chair from the stand through the internet.
The costermongers instead of renting the space of the market – they’re renting our urban furniture, which for regular users can be easily transformed into a bench or a chaise lounge chair. The new market shed is designed like a giant green roof, which covers both technical facilities as well as the space assigned for the costermongers and their stalls. The view towards the roof from the surrounding buildings was conceived as an important aspect of the design. In the described manner, the final image of the competition proposal is not only down to the work of the architect, whereas the appearance of the market is only completed when it is crowded with visitors throughout the day.
