The original brief was a dark and convoluted one borne out of the mind of our first tutor - formerly a Creative Director of an advertising agency.
The brief was simple - Choose the lyrics of a song and interpret them as a digital illustration.

But certain criteria had to be met:
One element had to have been downloaded;
At least one element had to have been scanned in;

At least one element had to have been scanned in;
A photograph had to be used;
and lastly the lyrics were to form an integral part of the design.

It's safe to say I went for it.
One of my all time top bands is Orange Goblin, and their 'Time Travelling Blues' is a phenomenal tune. So I used that.
The top frame is the second concept sketch I drew, to which the tutor saw it and said, "You'll never be able to do that..."

The initial concept was of two spacemen coming straight out of a wormhole and being attacked , with the lyrics playing out on the helmet's HUD. So, there's a tongue licking the visor, with sharp teeth impaling the helmet...
The first scanned element was the sea - which was, in fact, one of my favourite shirts.
The photograph I used found its way to being the falling spacemen's helmet - it's a photo of a grotty outdoor flip-top bin lid. And the downloaded content is the fractal generator I used to create the wormhole (enhanced with a lot of Photoshop trickery)
It wasn't really working for me, though, so I added a real menace to proceedings, and took away the visor. I also changed tack to present it like a parody of a vintage horror poster. Also, the skin of the kraken was captured using marbling ink and scanning in the results.
