Design III, Project 1, Northern Liberties Row Houses

This project called for six identical rowhouses in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philadelphia using 8'x20'x8' metal shipping containers as a main structural and spacial element. Each home has seven shipping containers stacked on top of one another in two four story towers, one tower in the front and one in the back. The containers container the smaller spaces such as bathrooms, storage, an office and two bedrooms.

Inside, the homes are designed to maximize openness in contrast to the typical row house. This is achieved by a double height living room between the first and second levels and a double-height dining/kitchen area between the second and third. This creates a visual open connection between the main common spaces and allows light to penetrate all the way from the top to the bottom.

Outdoor spaces are an important part of each home. Every unit has a front porch, a balcony off of the third floor master bedroom and a front and back roof garden that is directly accessible from the two top level bedrooms.
