Bala7 Baladna Belabn
Date-Bar
The two main words in this project are Date and Bar. Date as a romantic outing were two people meet to get to know each other and Date as a fruit, which represents culture, heritage, and religion to the Egyptian people. Bar as an establishment is a place that serves alcoholic beverages and is a place where people meet and get to know each other. After analysing both words, it was perceived that the “bar” contradicted with the symbolic meaning of the Date as a fruit in the Egyptian society.

Multiple observations we’re done to understand the Egyptian dating scene. The majority of the Egyptians go on dates in parks or stroll by the Nile on bridges where they have different kinds of drinks including tea, dates with milk… So, we wanted to find a design solution for the Egyptian majority that fits with the topic at hand. Our main purpose in this project is to capture the ever lasting memory. After analysis, the bar as a place that serves alcoholic beverages contradicted with the culture. So, we took the symbolic meaning of the bar which is a beverage, something to drink. So how can we merge Dates with a beverage? “Bala7 Bel Laban” AKA Dates with milk, is a beverage widely spread in the Egyptian culture.
Later on, the concept emerged; Tea bag with Date flavours and powdered milk that will be soaked in hot water and sipped. Finally how can we merge the tea bags with the love date and the everlasting memory? The couples tea bag. The couples tea bag is two tea bags attached together with a tag for couples to keep after drinking their Dates with milk together.
Product Design

The tea bags will look like a pyramid because not only do they exist in Giza, you can find pyramids all over Egypt. Another reason why the pyramid shape was chosen,  because how it allows all the ingredients to soak and flow smoothly in the tea bag.

Each piece was hand made and delicately handled to give it that extra something, and to make it luxurious and elegant. The tea bags are made out of translucent nylon mesh and sealed by a pressure machine for more safety for the user. The threads holding the tea bags are made out of cotton covered in wax to prevent the thread from getting soaked because it will be later on cut off and kept by any of the couple.

Attached to the tea bags thread is a card with a space for the couples to write their name and date of the date, for them to keep or maybe attach it to their key chain or hang it on to the rear view mirror of the car, or even if served by a cafe it could be tied to the ceiling of the cafe and kept.
Graphic Design

The graphic designing part was the part which made the product culturally relevant to Egypt. There were a lot of elements to be designed; the body, the card attached to the tea bags, the logo.
The Body it was decided to use purely Egyptian characters on the cover, the farmers from upper Egypt, farmers from middle of Egypt, Alexandrians, Nubians, Egyptian Bedouins, and of course Cairo characters. Because the project is about love and dating in the Egyptian culture, couples will be illustrated on to the box. First the male character will be standing alone in the environment suitable to the characters, and when the sliding mechanism takes place, the female character will appear next to the male and a speech bubble will pop out with a flirting phrase said by the male. The phrase will change according to the place the characters are from.
Package Design

The packaging system chosen for the project was the burgopak system. The Burgopak’s patented sliding mechanism lets two drawers conveniently connected at all times which makes it extremely User friendly and portable.

A Burgopak generally consists of three parts :
Body, pull, and pop. The body is the outer pack. The pop and pull form separate sliding elements which move in opposite directions when opening and closing the box - pulling on the pull causes the pop to pop out in the opposite direction from the body.

Inspired by relationships, and how they grow and develop, it was decided to see a development in the packaging, making it evolve in front of the user by adjusting the body using graphic design.
