INTERPRETAION of the FORM and the FUNCTION

Spring 2015

Intro to sculpture

I have been interested in making an object, which not only can be called as an art but also can have a function to people’s ordinary life. The object can be a painting, something ornamental, and furniture. In the future, I hope people being familiar with my designed objects and my arts being a part of people’s life. Therefore, changing formal elements, a context, and a function of an artist’s work that already exists is a good exercise for me to progress and develop my own artistic goal. For those reason, I chose a Robert Gober’s work as an object of remaking since he works with domestic objects such as sinks, doors, beds, and urinals. I especially decided to interpret Untiltled (a door) of him. For me, a door is most attractive object than any other parts of house in aspects that it introduces a person from a place to a place and makes people have a sense of curiosity for a new place beyond the door. I want to exaggerate its mysterious and fantastical characteristic by transforming its form and context.

Robert Gober made several pieces of doors. He changed only shapes of doors; doors are bended, crooked, overlapped, and angled. Unlike him, I am going to crop a door into three pieces, connect those separate pieces with hinges, and by doing so, give them a new form and flexibility. A door sculpture of mine will be able to stand itself and be folded. It will be moved and installed easily on anywhere. Not only that, I am also going to make a middle part of a door just with wire frames to make the place behind the door visible. By doing so, a door will be able to have lots of different appearances and meanings depending on the places where it is standing. Images of the installed door at everywhere – for example, in front of a view of the lake shore, on the floor, and on the street – and possible shapes of the door would enable people to imagine and think about a brand new meaning of an ordinary object; a door.

Untitled ( a door )

It looks like a door but doesn't function as a door. Then, is it still a door or an unknown object?
