Friends for Life

Our final asignment for the course MAV and also our graduation project for Devine.
This project was a group assignment that Tim Beeckmans and I made in 3 weeks.
We also had to write a paper about our research, process and final design/development.
We got the assignment from a real marketing company in Belgium, Mortierbrigade, so it was our
"first real project".

The problem: the games of the National Lotery in Belgium aren’t fun for the younger generation (18-30 y/o) to play.
Solution: find a fun way of introducing the games in a whole new way using the new technologies of this time, or think of a whole new game or platform. Make the games more popular!
-- note: I had, and still have, some issues with this assignment. I thought (and still think) that it is not ok to try to find a way to make young people gamble more. Though the National Lotery is a controlled lotery, which also puts their money in fighting gambling addiction and gives money to good causes, I still don't really feel good about it. In the end I tried to put my issues with the project aside and focus on solving the problem for the client.

We thought of a whole new way of playing lotery games: together!

Therefore we created multiplayer games, that you can play on seperate devices, together, against another team. Playing these games, you higher your chances on winning the grand prize: an all-in festival experience with your best friend.

Friends for Life became the name of the game and the campaign, because both the game and the prize focus on doing something together, with a good friend.

You play by connecting your accounts and then, using the online game room, finding another team of 2 friends to play a minigame against. The team that wins the game, can spin the wheel of fortune to see what they’ve won.

We also made a campaign website to advertise the main prize, a festival trip around the world with your Friend for Life. It will make our target audience dream and want to take part.

To launch the whole thing, we created a launch campagin on popular summer festivals, with a game that is similar to the game you can play all year round.
On the festival visitors can scan their wristband and recieve a free ticket to win a gadget.
With this ticket they can also take part, together with a friend, in a game to win the main prize: a duo ticket for the festival, for the next year.

The festival game is fun because it focusses on the festival spirit: instead of playing a minigame together against another team, teams of friends have to answer questions about each other. If they answer the same thing, they get points, if not, no points! The team with the most points at the end can spin the slot machine and see if they won a duo ticket.

For the presentation we gave about this project, we programmed parts of the app: the lobby, where you connect with your Friend for Life and another team, the minigames, and also the festival game that would be played on iPads with a big screen for audience to see what is happening and to be triggered to play too.

To lower the step from offline lotery tickets (which is what people know and trust) to online lotery games, we decided to make it possible to buy your ticket offline. With a code found on the ticket, you can continue your game online. Of course you can also buy your ticket online, but some people just don't like that, and they like the handling of scratching a scratch card. We didn't want to take that away from them.
