The city was founded by the Phoenicians as the Zyz, which in Phoenician language means flower. The story begins in 734 BC Phoenician Palermo. Until that time the area was a trading center and a base for the northwestern Sicily. Acquired some commercial importance due to its location but especially to the two rivers (the Kemonia and Papireto), became a popular destination for Greeks who populated the eastern part of Sicily, which, however, never managed to conquer.
The first breakthrough came from the Romans, who, after a long siege, managed to remove it from the Carthaginians of Amilcare Barca, forced to take refuge at the foot of Mount Pellegrino (then called Ercta): attempts to recapture the Carthaginians were useless and the city became a Roman conquest by the name of Panormus. Under the rule of Rome, Palermo continued to serve as the strategic port in the Mediterranean, experiencing a period of tranquility for several centuries. Palermo was Roman city until the barbarian invasions caused the looting and destruction of the city.
