For the public release of the Watch Face API for Android Wear, Google sought out brands, artists, creatives and producers to equip their Play Store with a timely collection of watch faces for smartwatches. As part of the collaboration, MediaMonks designed and developed five diverse UIs that bring watch face flair to your Android Wear. Utilizing a variety of smartwatch assets, the faces feature dynamic backgrounds, live data integration and an artful application of the ambient and interactive modes.
NAILS BY MEI
Miho ‘Mei’ Kawajiri (aka CiaManhattan2012) is celebrated for her imaginative, hand-painted nail designs. Her works are smart, intricate, and beautifully bizarre, so of course – we were delighted by the opportunity to work with her. In order to transform Mei’s fingernail art into watch hands, we coproduced a series of twelve animated adaptations. Each vibrant vignettes relates to a particular time of day, week, and even the (local) weather..
SURFLINE
Surfline specializes in surf forecasting, surf reports and a wave of other surf-related things for dudes and dudettes around the world. Bringing such a practical purpose to the table, the watch face needed to match the quality of the data their network provides. With this in mind, we joined heads to create the ultimate watch face for surfers and beach goers who never want to miss a worthwhile wave. The design translates data through a clear-cut interface, displaying a wide variety of surf essentials within the small space the watch face provides, such as; tide times, wind direction, wave heights and weather conditions.
UN PETIT MONDE
Kurt Moses’ magnificent miniature photography captures figurines in real-world environments, creating striking scenarios that tell open-ended tales. To bring Moses’ photography to the small screen, we remodelled his unique visual style into a series of daily timelapses that change with the time of day. The watch face shifts through an album from Moses’ exploits in White Sands, New Mexico, and each scene was captured and composed specifically for Android Wear. Layered with travel-inspired interfaces, Un Petit Monde adds a little adventure to your everyday life.
PORSCHE
Porsche is renowned for its definitive aesthetic of tradition and innovation. To complement this, our watch face design is composed of a minimalistic but effective user interface. Both clean and functional, its design transforms with the race season’s racing days, allowing true Porsche aficionados to keep their eyes on the track while keeping track of time.
RAW VEGAN BLONDE
AMBA is a ‘veg art’ design brand created by artist Amber Locke (aka Raw Vegan Blonde). Inspired by the beauty of natural foods, Amber crafts intricate arrangements by hand using fresh ingredients and an even fresher creative process. Colorful, playful and unsurprisingly tasteful; her creations are layered with a central vignette displaying time telling essentials. With an elegant pattern for each day of the week, this watch face is ripe and ready for your Android Wear.
