Puffin Book Cover Competition 2011: Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl: James and the Giant Peach
Roald Dahl book covers. Originally a competition entry for Puffin Books 2011, I chose to elaborate on by producing a series of covers to target two audiences; adults and children. The images above show pictogram covers which are aimed at children. I chose iconic imagery from the book and used this to create a striking image for the front cover.
I kept the background colours the same for consistency, also being a neutral background for the colours to work on clearly.
My adult version was entered for the Puffin books competition. I produced imagery from the book which is illustrated through the title. I presented typographical images onto the cover to give an unusual illustration for the cover; appearing to be striking and interesting.
The monochromatic version seemed to be the most striking, which is what I entered for the competition. As most book covers adopt colourful covers and imagery to catch attention, I have done the opposite here opting for a clean, white minimal cover which will stand out on a bookshelf amongst a rainbow of colour.
I did however add colour to my typographical covers aimed at adults, to see how they would appear. My conceptual versions make use of two colours to their best advantage. The spine remains white as an invert of the cover. Each book is colour coded for easy recognition.
