New Work by Jasmina Tomic

Jasmina Tomic uses photographic and digital installations to explore how time and space are experienced as related to desire, courtship, and intimacy. These themes are addressed through both the personal context of memory and the societal context of cultural expectation.
In People That Matter, Tomic presents three works: L’homme(s) is a large-scale photo installation based on Renaissance marriage portraits, I have this thing with someone is a series of digital screens that flash with intimate text-message conversations, and D-moll is a series of three photographs inspired by a Serbian song by Djordje Balasevic, of the same title, which looks at the traces people that matter to us leave in our minds. All three works engage in a conscious play between what is simultaneously present and absent within each piece. Utilizing transient subject matter, the artist works with notions of how fragments of our lives can provide clues to who we are as a whole. Tomic thus attempts to capture the ephemeral nature of intimacy in full knowledge of the certain failure of such a task. She can only hope to give it a new form by jogging the spectator’s memories of past intimate encounters, realized or imagined.
Jasmina Tomic was born in Belgrade, in what is now known as Serbia, and immigrated during her adolescence to New Zealand, where she attended the Elam School of Fine Arts. She then moved to Paris, where she earned her Masters degree, while foraying into fashion photography. She has lived in Beijing and Shanghai on arts exchange programs and currently lives in New York City, where she has been a member of Wayfarers Studio Program since 2011.
An Opening Reception for People That Matter will be held on June 28th from 7pm-10pm, and the work will be on display until July 21st.
Wayfarers is a studio program and exhibition space dedicated to creating a community of makers who will champion each other, but also hold each other’s feet to the fire. We host solo exhibitions, critiques, drawing parties, group shows, live music, experimental performances, puppetry events, readings, workshops, video screenings and other inventive events. These events are usually open to the public, almost always cheap or free and designed with the same championing/feet scorching spirit in mind.
