WOVEN OBJECT
This paper sculpture grows from modules resembling parts of a woven paper basket. Each uses 28 strips of bristol paper, allowing for doubled up layers to ensure stiffness and stability. The strips are then woven together into a basket-like shape and tapered to four ends. This module is repeated and stacked on itself to form pods. To resolve the tapered connections on the outside, a two-way joint is formed from a single sheet of paper folded in on itself and is able to bind strips from two different directions.

The object contains about 900 strips of paper in all. Nowhere in this object is glue or any other binding substance used; the sculpture relies solely on the strength of the paper to hold itself together.
Some positive and negative photocopies of the form during the process to study the spatial qualities developing.
One typical module, woven in double layers with 28 strips of paper.
Two modules stack together like this to begin forming pods. Tape is removed as the sculpture grows.
Additional tests were done experimenting with seven-way braids in the bristol paper.
Hand drafted drawings providing section and overhead plan views of the model.
