Priming users on the cause of a notification
In user interfaces of current operating systems, the icon of an application is often modified when said application attempts to notify its user, in order to make the notification apparent. This study sought to investigate whether the nature of a notification (positive, neutral, or negative) can be made apparent through animation of the notifying application's icon.
This project was inspired by the notification method employed by Mac OS® X.
Research on human body language and animation techniques lead to the creation of 13 different animations. The emotive emphasis of these were evaluated in user study with 40 participants. A representative for positive, neutral, and negative were selected.
The animation used to convey the occurence of a positive event.
The animation used to convey the occurence of a neutral event.
The animation used to convey the occurence of a negative event.
The questionnaire filled in by the participant after each trial (excuse the Danish).
The classifications for each animation. All animations were classified correctly in atleast 75 % of the classifications. This was significantly above random.
