Breaking Barriers: Jackie Robinson
On Opening Day of 1947, Jackie Robinson took the field as the Brooklyn Dodgers’ first baseman, breaking Major League Baseball’s color barrier. The 28-year-old, who had been a four-sport star at UCLA, shouldered immeasurable weight as an embodiment of integration, withstanding every manner of hateful expression to thrive on the field and winning the National League’s Rookie of the Year award. Today, his number, 42,
is retired throughout MLB, except on Jackie Robinson Day, April 15, when all players wear it.
