OLD COUNTRY HOUSE RESTORATION
Sinarades | Corfu | Greece
This is an old and derelict country house located in Sinarades village, on the island of Corfu in Greece. The owners wanted it restored in order to use again as a vacation house.
It is an old stone structure with wooden floor and roof. This house was in a very bad condition. The roof was in the brink of collapse and so was the old wooden floor. The plaster was already worn off. Plants were growing on the roof and the walls. The windows and doors were missing and the naked stone structure with the characteristic arc, locally called "Botzos", was starting to decompose.
Local archeological authorities considered this house to be a local monument and it's architectural style was a serious matter of preservation, if any addition or extension were to be constructed.
The works started with all the wooden damaged elements of this house being carefully demolished. The walls were reinforced internally and externally with shotcrete. As soon as the external stone structure was reinforced, the wooden roof was reconstructed as an exact copy of the demolished one and was put into place. The addition design suggested that the former wooden floor had to be replaced by a steel independent structure, so as to not affect in any way the exterior stone walls.
