As part of the International Design Studio 2015 our role was to offer design help to the Leather artisans from the Meghwal community in Kutch, Gujarat, India. After closely working with them, observing and learning their techniques of leather craft over two weeks, I came up with some products and solutions of my own.
My first exercise was to explore the technique of punching used by the Kutch artisans. I took as my inspiration the Jaali ( Grids cut in stone) seen in monuments across India. With the punches available with the artisans, I made my own tessellations and grids.
The end product was a Diary/Book cover made from raw leather.
