Leather Only- International Design Studio 2015
As part of the International Design Studio 2015 our role was to offer design help to the Leather artisans from the Meghwal community in Kutch, Gujarat, India. After closely working with them, observing and learning their techniques of leather craft over two weeks, I came up with some products and solutions of my own.
Since bags are one of their best sellings products, we decided to focus solely on ladies bags and clutches.
A clutch bag made from raw leather and distress dyed. The zari (gold) embroidery was inspired by the artisan's traditional technique. A single strap is used to close the flap. The idea was to design something that requires no buttons and minimal stitching.
One of our final products, this ladies handbag was designed collectively by our group of three. The design is inspired by the idea of making a bag from a single piece of leather, that requires zero stitching and easy folding. A hint of Zari work was added on the patch in the centre as an identifier of the artisan's signature technique.

My first exercise was to explore the technique of punching used by the Kutch artisans. I took as my inspiration the Jaali ( Grids cut in stone) seen in monuments across India.  With the punches available with the artisans, I made my own tessellations and grids.
The end product was a Diary/Book cover made from raw leather.
A purse dyed in single colour, with a lighter shade of leather used in stitches. The surface is highly polished to give it a metallic sheen. A multi-coloured pom pom added to the side as a signature of the Kutch artisans.
This bag is an outcome of a surface exploration done using tape and ombre dyed using a sponge. The colours chosen are characteristic of the Kutch artisans, including the turquoise pom pom used as an accent.
A colour chart made from leather swatches. The idea was to introduce a whole new palette of colours possible from the existing dyes that the artisans use. My objective here was to acquaint them with colour mixing and rich shades that may appeal more to customers.
