Athena Chung FW2015 Collection The idea of the patterns originated from a 1985 fantasy film “Return to Oz”, which was a sequel of “The Wizard of Oz”. In the story, Dorothy returned to the land of Oz. The old friends we familiar with did not appear in this story. Yet Dorothy was befriended by a group of new companions, her chicken Billina who could talk, a clockwork mechanical man named Tik-Tok, who was so reliable, Jack Pumpkinhead, who was a timid pumpkin, and Gump, the head of a moose-like animal whose body was mainly composed of two sofas. The group, cooperating with all their might, destroyed Nome King’s underground domain, regained the land of Oz and found the rightful ruler of Oz, Princess Ozma, who had been enchanted into the mirror at the Nome King's request. Though the movie was plotted by fantasies, its opening and finale depicted nothing but reality. I was obsessed with the dream-like atmosphere penetrating the film. It recalled me to my childhood; when being a boy, I enjoyed observing the tiny things encompassed daily life and making up chimerical stories, through which my kingdom was built up. Dorothy’s experience and my childhood imaginations superimposed during the playing of the movie. Suddenly it occurred to me that, perhaps, reality was just unreal and truth was never true. Therefore upon interpreting this topic, instead of bizarre and magical effects, I fancied everything to return to the origin, where a pumpkin was still a pumpkin and where there was no Ozma in the mirror. The land of Oz existed among the people who believed in it and in Dorothy’s mind.
