Creating a Summary of Qualifications for Steel M.C.

For: Steel Management Corporation
Position: Marketing Assistant
Date: Summer 2013

Problem: New to the Waste to Energy sector, Steel M.C. was having trouble communicating information about the technology, its many processes, advantages and financial projections in a consise manner. The team and I were spending too much time answering questions and repeating information to potential clients. It became clear that we needed to create a document that not only presented our newly commercialized technology, but that explained its beginnings, advantages and business opportunities in a simpler way. Working together with the group of experts that conform our team, I was in charge of drafting and presenting a Summary of Qualifications.

Process: this turned out to be a summer-long project. I had weekly meetings with the CEO and Head of Marketing to bounce off ideas and make sure the document was developing in the right direction. I went through the various documents we already had and over some emails sent to clients that helped me identity which questions were the most common. Finally, I had several conference calls with the very scientists who developed the technology.

Insights: during these conference calls, the team and I realized that the vocabulary explaining the technology was too technical for some clients to fully understand how our technology worked. This allowed us to not only take into consideration the content of the document, but also its redaction style.

Actions: the document was divided into sections: executive summary, introduction, origins of our technology, how does our technology operate, value proposition, technology and company background, benefits, technology applications, competitors, past and ongoing projects and information about how to start a project with us.

Results: the Summary of Qualifications I drafted for Steel M.C. is around 30 pages long. It was written in Spanish first, the team's and my native language, and then it was translated to English. It was reviwed, edited and later approved by the CEO and team. Since its conception it has been sent to every potential client in the first stages of negociation.
