As our first project for the unit of Design I, we were asked to create a visual representation of a classmate of our choice. I opted for the technique of digital illustration to represent my colleague Tânia Ramos and focused on a very specific style of digital illustration called flat design, known for its simplicity and minimalistic use of simple shapes and flat colours. I purposely chose not to create a direct representation of Tânia (e.g. portrait) and decided instead to illustrate a number of objects she carries around on a day-to-day basis. With that, I aimed to convey the idea that the objects we carry around with us most of the time, are, to a certain extent, a reflection of our personality, an extension of who we are. With that in mind, I chose to represent her computer and her phone as a way to showcase her love for technology, a notepad, a pen and a pencil (symbol of her organization); and her accessories (watch, glasses, bracelet and make up) as a reflection of her own personal taste and her care for her appearance. Lastly, I added one other element, the nail polish bottle, as a way of representing a very characteristic feature of Tânia's, her love for nail art.
