This book seeks to preserve the lost typography of Savannah, Georgia. The objective was to create a memoir of hand-lettered, hand-painted signage and typography photographed in the Chatham metropolitan area. Using a very clean and simple layout, the photography and subject matter will be allowed to speak for itself.

Savannah is inundated with a wealth of history, but unfortunately an important part of this city is quickly disappearing. The craft of hand-lettering and hand-painting signage has long been exhausted. Nowadays, a sign can be produced more quickly and incredibly cheap than the time it used to take to paint letterforms, words, images, and numbers. Communication still maintains itself in contemporary sign design but the craft and creativity is often overlooked or disregarded. In the city of Savannah, and as it seems elsewhere around the world, these artifacts of historical significance are being lost everyday. Painted over or taken down, neglected or forgotten, hand-painted signs are becoming ghosts. The story behind the signs is one of history, a storeowners pride or perhaps an expression that lures in the attention of those around. These signs tell stories and unless they are preserved, along with their messages, be lost forever.
