A roaring gorilla is what illustrators’ dreams are made

Ken Taylor seems to have gotten himself into the enviable position of being asked to illustrate pop culture’s wish list of subject matters.

Peruse his portfolio of cult movie heroes and villains, rock gods, folk legends and literary protagonists and the impact hits you immediately, but what lies beneath that is the fact that all pieces are commissioned by clients. They are not personal fan art. The fact that they are all commissions is testament to the respect Ken has earned in the industry. Ken’s performance can be attributed to the mantra he lives by, “You’re only as good as your last fuck up”. It’s a mantra that has lead to a body of work that is all “killer and no filler”, but it can lead to an artist putting an amount of pressure on them self rivalled only by Atlas. So it was nice to see Ken complete a commission of a giant gorilla for no other reason than gorillas are great fun to draw.

“I really loved working on the breakout posters – i have never really worked on an underage festival before and it was just a really nice opportunity to have a bit of fun with a brief without having to make it too grown up and in your face – that being said it still had to have a serious festival punch to it.”- Ken Taylor
