Sunshine, freedom and festivals

Vama Veche in the summer is one of those things you have to see and experience for yourself, since no amount of words can describe the diverse, fun and often crazy atmosphere of this place.
Despite its tiny size and a population count of 200 people, Vama Veche is known countrywide for its summertime shenanigans. The 1st of May announces the start of the season - but by the end of the month, this village is completely flooded with people from all walks of life, from starry-eyed teens fresh off the train to nostalgic hippie camper families to biker octogenarians and their dogs. Big rowdy groups, couples and singles are all made to feel equally welcome. So what brings them all together?
The Black Sea is great for a swim, if you don't mind the occasional algae sticking to you
Daytime is usually reserved for recovery, whether spiritual or from last night's libations. People frolic in the sand, go for a swim or hang out at one of the many beach bars or pubs. At night, the concerts begin, driving the sunburned crowds into a frenzy of singing and swaying. Rock and folk go hand in hand with the free spirit of Vama Veche. The "Folk You" festival is a long established tradition that gives off a faint Woodstock vibe.
Vama Veche has always been on the 'fringes' of seaside resorts - it's the perfect place for the penniless hitchhikers and the budget-conscious - because most of the beach is dedicated to tents and caravans. It's not uncommon to sleep in the open, right on the sandy beach. At the height of the season, you can't throw a stone without hitting a tent or a sleeping bag.
One of the most interesting paradoxes about this place is the feeling of complete freedom and organized chaos. You get the impression that all of this happens organically, that folks just show up here and the fun starts. Which is partly true, at least. There's a sort of unspoken understanding between people, and it dawns on you once you get here: you are free to do whatever you want, as long as you don't harm or judge anyone. Everyone can be themselves and express however they wish, whether that's by wearing the silliest garments they own, with a feather boa on top, or by forgoing clothes entirely.
I also found it a great spot for some people watching, since it's one of the most diverse crowds you can find in Romania on any given summer day. While its recent popularity threatened the local culture and atmosphere of the tiny village for a while, Vama Veche strongly remains one of the most freeing and fun places in this country.
