Quest for the Queen

Final character design for Ailis, a mountain dragon known as an Oigchait ("Ice cat"). Being a solitary species of dragon that spends most of its life in icy mountains, Ailis can be a bit timid and awkward around other dragons, especially when she has no choice but to journey to the Mountain of the Queen's Domain to find the Stone of Reason. Despite her shy demeanor however, she cares very deeply for her companions, and will fight ferociously toprotect them is they are threatened. Ailis can breath a special fire known as "freezer burn", which leaves behind a scorch mark lined with ice fractals. Digital

Final character design for Aureia, a highland dragon known as a Lanathair. Raised by sheep as hatchlings, Lanathairs are fiercely protective of their "foster families" and use static electricity stored in their wool to fire powerful blasts of lightning at potential threats. Lanathairs are among the most intelligent dragon species, and are the only species that is able to read. Aureia recieved her glasses from a human farmer, who built a special shrine in dedication to Lanathairs for protecting his flock and left the glasses as an offering. These dragons show a great interest in human artifacts, and it is not uncommon to see Lanathairs wearing these small trinkets which they receive from the shrines. Digital

Final character design for Aterlith, a hot-tempered dragon known as a Ferostell. Highly impulsive and prone to violence, Ferostells are known for liking to exert their power over others and greatly enjoy setting things on fire. The powerful flames they spew can reach temperatures of over 1700 degrees. Aterlith can be very stubborn at times, and often uses her size and strength to get her way, but deep down what she truly wants is to feel a sense of belonging within the group after being cast out of her family. Before meeting Ailis and Aureia, Aterlith lived alone in a volcano with her good friend Mollon, whom she grew up with. Digital

Colored drawing of Mollon. Her facial and wing design would be tweaked slightly later. Mollon is an impish species of dragon known as a Pomdrake. Pomdrakes are small dragons that are highly territorial, when disturbed, they spew a napalm-like substance that explodes upon contact with an intruder. Mollon has been living around a volcano with her friend Aterlith since she was small, and often ventures out to get food when Aterlith does not feel like moving. Eggs are always on her mind, and she will obey any order as long as she gets them in return, a fact that the her companions use to their advantage several times throughout the series. Digital

Finished character design for Verbati, a type of forest dragon known as a Vularvina ("Fox pig"). She is very shy and flighty, often hiding in the thick brush to avoid predators. Being one of the few herbivourous dragons, Verbati primarily feeds on roots, bulbs, mushrooms, and other vegetation, but will occasionally steal eggs. When cornered, she can unleash a volley of white-hot fireballs at her attackers. Despite being shy, Verbati is an excellent guide, as she knows her thick forest home by heart. She tags along with the main group several times throughot their journey, and becomes a vital aid to them at various points. Digital
Final chracter design for Nivek, a male Oigchait and Ailis's love interest in the story. He is a rare specimen of Oigchait that was born with dark-colored fur instead of the usual white. Nature tends to select against Oigchaits that are born this way, since they rely on their white fur to help them blend in with the snow when hunting prey. Because of this, Nivek has had to go through life inventing unconventional ways of catching food, such as hiding underneath the snow in ambush and teaching himself how to swim. His success in life isn't without help though, as he is aided by his companion Clavixcor, who travels with him in exchange for protection. He meets Ailis when he startles her by popping out of the snow mid-hunt. While Ailis is at first awkward around him due to growing up alone, she eventually warms up to him as he recurs throughout the journey and the two eventually become mates. Digital

Final character design for Clavixcor, a type of dragon called an Umbradis and Aterlith's love interest in the story. Umbradis dragons are a very rare nocturnal species due to a high mortality rate in hatchlings. They are extremely maneuverable in flight, and their fire is so volatile, that it can pierce solid metal like a dagger. After being orphaned as a hatchling, Clavixcor had a chance encounter with Nivek, and the two banded togther for food and protection. It takes awhile for Aterlith to return his affections, but eventually she does so when he risks his life to save her from a dragon turned Feral. Digital
