Every year the RCAD TypeClub puts on a Ligature Show, which exhibits typography from every major. One of the categories is drop caps, where students choose one letter, symbol, or number to represent in any style and medium they want. This year I signed up for the number Seven.
Conceptually I wanted to focus on the religious symbolism of the number 7, which is most often tied with the creation of earth, and the creation of Adam. The torn up seven would also represent a human in mid creation, leaving room for abstraction. Initially I was going more realistic but it became overly gory and the colors were getting too muddy, as a result I decided to juxtapose the morbid concept with bright and friendly colors.
