The Bamiyan Cultural Centre, Design Competition

The Bamiyan Cultural Centre will be a cornerstone in efforts to preserve culture, promote research and build community around culture, in order to build cohesion in a fractured cultural context. The Centre will provide space for archaeological and ethnographic artefacts from across the country and serve as a multi-purpose state-of-the art cultural complex and research facility. The building will provide adaptable space that can be used for variety of culture-related purposes, ultimately benefiting many stakeholders across a wide demographic.

Mission Concepts:
- Enrich community life through a variety of programs and cultural events, such as festivals, films, drama, music, dance, etc., in ways that reflect the culture of the region, disseminate culture information, and raise awareness about cultural heritage.
- Provide a venue and organize cultural, educational and recreational programs in order for the public to learn and appreciate different facets of Afghanistan’s heritage, history and cultural context.
- Foster and cultivate cultural exchange between different ethnic groups in Afghanistan to contribute meaningfully to the spirit of multiculturalism.
- Promote the creation, performance and appreciation of the arts by coordinating arts advocacy.
- Serve the community by establishing, maintaining and operating a unique facility, and provide services that contribute to the vitality of the community.
- Serve the democratic society by providing a public space for civil society.
THE PRIME GOLD OF THIS PROJECT HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO UNITE THE CITY AND IT´S COMMUNITY TO THEIR HISTORY.
“COHESION” BETWEEN USER-SPACE-NATURE, THAT´S WHY THE BUILDING ADAPTED IT SELF TO THE SITE AND CONTINIUSLY TRY TO LINK THE USERS TO THEIR SURROUNDINGS BY THE USE OF PUBLIC AREAS AND VIEWS TO THE VALLEY.
IT ALSO TRIES NOT TO COMPETE WITH THE ENVIROMENT BUT TO MERGE IN TO IT LOSING IT SELF IN THE VIEW OF THE HORIZONT.
IT MAGNIFIES THE TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE BY USING LOCAL MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES JUST AS BRICKS, CONCRETE AND STONE, AND USES PASIVE SYSTEMS OF CLIMATE CONTROL (MOVABLE PANELES, TRICK WALLS, NATURAL LIGHTING AND VENTILATION, ALSO DUE IT´S SEMI-BURIED HAS A BETTER CONTROL)
ANOTHER KEY ACHIVEMENT IN THE DESIGN WAS TO CREATE A BUILDING EASY TO READ BY USING A CENTRAL LOBBY THAT DISTRIBUTES TO ALL AREAS.
FINALLY THE ENTIRE SEARCH OF THIS PROYECT IS TO CREATE NOT ONLY A CULTURAL SPACE BUT A LINK BETWEEN A COMNITY AND IT´S ENVIROMENT.
EXHIBITION SPACE
THIS AREA WAS DESIGNED TO BE FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTABLE TO ANY SIZE OF EXHIBITION. THIS WAS ACHIVED BY DIVIDING THE SPACE IN TO THREE ROOMS, EACH ONE WITH 150 sm THIS ROOMS ARE DIVIDED BY MOVING WALLS AND HAVE CONNECTION TO THE OUTER SPACES ALLOWING FIVE DIFFERENT EXHIBITION AREAS OR A SINGLE SPACE OF MORE THAN 700 SM.
IT WAS PLANED FROM THE STAR THE DIFERENT TAGE OF GROWING FOR THE BUILDING LEAVING IN THE ACTUAL EXHIBITION SPACE ROOM FOR ANOTER AREA WITH 150 SM AND OTHER FOUR READIING SPACES FOR INVESTIGATION AREA WITH THEIR OWN ACCESS.
FOR THE NORTH OF THE SITE IT WAS PLANNED AN AREA IN WICH THE LOWER LEVER BE USED FOR PUBLIC AND EXHIBITION AREAS, AND THE UPPER LEVEL FOR PRIVATE USES SUCH AS READING ROOMS OR OFFICES LEAVING ALSO GREEN AREAS AT THE EXTERIOR CONNECTING TO THE VALLEY.
