    Dr. Rainer Gruessner is a member of some of the most prestigious surgical societies in the world. He has published over 600 manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters over the past 20 years. Dr. Rainer Gruessner has specialized in transplantation surgery with an emphasis on chronic pancreatic disease and liver failure.
Dr. Rainer Gruessner earned his medical degree and medical thesis from the Johannes Gutenberg University School of Medicine in 1983 in Mainz, Germany. In 1991, he completed his “Habilitation”, the German equivalent of a PhD, at Philipps University in Marburg, Germany. He completed a two year transplantation surgery fellowship at the University of Minnesota. He received additional training in living donor liver transplantation at the Kyoto University in Japan.
Dr. Rainer Gruessner used his skills and experience to contribute to the field of transplantation surgery in unprecedented ways, from his 600 abstracts, manuscripts, and book chapters, to his overhaul of the University of Arizona’s Department of Surgery after his appointment to department head in 2007.
