Phoenix New Times
Here's a fun animated cover illo I worked on for the Phoenix New Times on a piece about the gentrifaction of the "Roosevelt Row" neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona. I was asked to create a "hipster" character with a "Roosevelt Row" tattoo. Below is my pitch for the cover which includes an animated version for web/mobile. This direction was scrapped in the sketch phase by the Editor and AD for a different approach. I still really liked the idea so I went ahead and made it anyway as a personal project:-)
Animated web/mobile version
Sketches. I really liked the first sketch and was pushing for a neck tattoo so we could see the hipster's face but the idea was squashed.
At this point I decided to proceed with the first sketch idea as a personal project on the side. Basic blocking in stage in Zbrush
Refining the sculpt and finishing details. I got rid of the flannel and hands to help keep the focus on the tattoo.
