The Brief
A coffee table had to be designed for a living room which had a couch on one side and a low mattress on the other. There is limited space between the couch and the mattress and the table would be placed in between these two seating areas.
The Concept
I wanted to design an organically shaped coffee table that was low enough to be used while sitting on the mattress and high enough for the couch. The color white was used to create contrast on the dark carpet on which the table would be placed.
The design for the base of the table was inspired by the structure of the Guggenheim Museum. The other base was inspired by the jali walls.
The Challenges
The circular disc base is heavier on the top than the bottom and the bottom most disc has a very small diameter. This created a huge problem with the balancing of the table. However, the vertical base on the opposite side helped give stability.
Learnings
While designing a constructing this table I learnt quite a lot about the different types of wood available, strength of materials, ways in which to finish the product, different stages of treating the wood and giving it the final touch ups, etc. I also learnt how to use various equipments to cut, drill, punch and smoothen the wood. I was able to understand the different products and equipments available for a particular function.
