The client emailed me a detailed sketch complete with measurements so I set about making the piece. The top was to be made from contrasting tones of Oak and I suggested using uneven widths of light for the two outside lengths with a piece of brown oak in the centre.

 

The addition of a shelf underneath to store magazines and boxes was made from steel flat bar welded to lengths of 25mm angle.

 

The steel was lightly distressed using sandpaper and a wire brush to selectively remove the thin layer of carbon which is created during the rolling process in the mill. This creates a contrast between the dark carbon and exposed shiny steel forming highlights which are empiasised once the metal has been coated with a glossy lacquer.

 

The table is held together with a mixture of high tensile steel bolts and welds. As with all my pieces of furniture, a couple of coats of tung oil followed by a couple of coats of hard wax oil create a hard wearing surface.
