    Beards and moustaches have appeared and disappeared from men’s fashion throughout the past. The fashion of facial hair can be described as following an ever repeating circular trend. During the eighteenth century a clean shaved symbolised the masculinity of a gentleman. However, by the nineteenth century the fashion of a gentleman had changed completely, beards and moustaches appeared and the identify of masculinity changed. One writer noted in 1872 that “now, whether we go among rich or poor, laymen or clergy, we find beards everywhere” (Beards, 1872). Definitely, by the twentieth century the movement was gone. The main reason for it was that the “modern” beauty industry defined facial hair as unhygienic. In every period of time, men modernity. So, the image of the masculine man had changed to a “softer” object. this being an athletic, muscular and fully shaved man. Today, beards and moustaches are back in fashion.
