Rijeka 2020: new visual identity

The proposed new visual identity of Rijeka 2020 is derived from 81 pictograms designed for this occasion in order to fully represent the complexity of Rijeka. All of them are concentrating around the words “Rijeka: Port of Diversity” in the same way in which ships are gathered in the port. The pictogram of a crane was selected out of them for the logotype used before 2020 - Rijeka 2020: Candidate City for European Capital of Culture  (Rijeka 2020., Grad kandidat za Europsku prijestolnicu kulture) – as well as for the logotype used during and after year 2020 - Rijeka 2020: European Capital of Culture (Rijeka 2020., Europska prijestolnica kulture).

The port crane is the basis of the logo due to its visual reminescency to the grapheme “R,” and even more “r.” Even though the port of Rijeka has over 4000 ships registered every year, an image of a ship was not selected for the logo since it would bear associations to overseas and Mediterranean cruisers that will be inevitably familiar with Rijeka due to its attractive geographic position. Crane, on the other hand, represents a combination of maritime and land, the port that provides the way deeper into the continent and safe sailing to other continents.

While the logotype for Rijeka before 2020 is monocolulered, the second one contains three colors that are connected in one spot which points towards Rijeka - the centre of Europe, as well as the center of the Mediterranean. The port of Rijeka is the most northerly large port in Croatia, being in the centre between the western and eastern Mediterranean. Three directions also describe the position of Rijeka which is close to everything - Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, equally distant from the north-eastern and south-eastern Croatia. The selected three colors represent three impacts on culture of Rijeka:

- Blue – the geographical impact (the river, the Adriatic sea and Mediterranean)
- Red - the economic and social impact (work)
- Ocher – the historical. This color is adapted façade color of buildings constructed in the Austro-Hungarian monarchy ("Maria - Theresa - yellow" as Danilo Kiš called it).
