A New Way Of Hiring
In the fall of 2009, I found myself in need of new staff for the Content Department I lead at BFG. Because so much of what we do revolves around social media, I decided to take a different approach in finding talent.

I went to Twitter. No resumes. No cover letters. Just 140 characters to catch my attention and show some creative thinking.

The approach worked. Not only did I end up with a well-qualified group of potential recruits, but I also learned a lot about them in the process. I was able to get to know them - for better or for worse - on the social web. I was able to see how much they "got it" when it came to social media. And when I started interviewing people for the position, I found that the sessions were much different than the way I'd interviewed in the past. I was able to dig in and ask focused questions without too much of the get to know you type stuff.

The idea also resonated with the media. MSNBC, Huffington Post, the New York Post and countless blogs from around the world began buzzing about it, earning BFG some unexpected press. It also lead to a Promo Interactive Award in 2010 in the New Media category.

These images show the first person I hired through this approach. I've since used it exclusively for anyone wishing to join the Content team.
