Un*spoken is an interactive installation that explores the similarities and differences between laughter and crying - two vastly different yet parallel emotional responses. Language is much more than dialect. Emotional response compels us and creates a universal phenomenon in which we can understand and relate to others on an intimate level regardless of geographical location. Laughter, a complex occurrence, can be abrupt and uncontrollable or precise and pointed. Crying, an effusive reaction, is brought on by a wide range of situations spanning from joy to sorrow. By translating a database of such sounds into music that can be played back, the piece allows the audience to come to their own conclusions and comparisons. Un*spoken was created by transcribing audio which has been stripped of its contact into dot compositions that can be played through a music box.
