Scars and Crowns

While the topic of scarification is often discussed a controversial issue, the individual men and women who experience this practice can be neglected in the conversation. This piece pays homage to both Yoruba beaded crowns and the practice of scarification as culturally significant traditions. While an individual's unique set of scars represents their own personal history, the practice of scarification and the wearing of ceremonial crowns are symbols of the tribe's shared history over countless generations. Both of these traditions are integral in creating the identity of an individual, as well as a community.
