In Japan, tattoos are often associated with criminality, and are shunned in public places such as bath houses. However, for the members of the Yakuza, tattoos are a show of strength and solidarity, and a form of self expression. This wall installation was inspired by the visual language of the Yakuza's tattoos, and features the blue-black of ink on a flesh toned ground. It is a narrative about the young women that I know who have accumulated tattoos on their journey to self discovery.
