I’m Sheila Halali, I am a senior at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and my collection is called Daring Greatly. Inspired by the research of Brené Brown, my collection explores the philosophy that connection cannot exist without vulnerability, and that with vulnerability comes power and strength. It is said that “You cannot selectively numb emotion. Numb the dark and you numb the light”. Daring Greatly plays on this idea of light vs. dark, connection vs. lack of connection, and strength vs. fragility, while showing how it is imperative to open yourself up to vulnerability in order to live a fulfilled life. I have designed a six look evening wear collection, which will be developed throughout the next five months, hopefully debuting at the SCAD Fashion Show in May. Daring Greatly is built around words; around a story of abstract ideas, such as the way humans protect themselves emotionally. This collection is a pure representation of my vision and perspective from beginning to end. SCAD has many opportunities available to us as students, and one of the many is the Style Lab mentor program. This past quarter I was lucky enough to be chosen by evening wear designer Juan Carlos Obando to be mentored by himself for the remainder of the year. Through one-on-one critiques and guidance, under his coaching I am confident I will be able to execute my collection exactly as I envision it. My collection consists entirely of natural materials: lux silks, delicate cottons, and lush mohair. It is strongly based on my use of textiles, the majority of which I have created myself through the use of print-design, silk painting, and hand crafted fabric treatments. Creating my own textiles means I will have a collection made up of unique fabrics exclusive to myself, creating a truly one-of-a-kind collection. However, this feat comes at a high price, requiring not only the fabrics themselves to be purchased, but also dyes and paints, and the cost of screen printing my own prints. The majority of the money I am asking for will go directly into creating these distinct fabrics, with the remainder of the money going towards all of the notions and supplies needed to create the looks. I have saved as much as I could for this collection, but unfortunately it just isn’t enough. Although traditional fundraising platforms are compatible for many people, they are not proving to be the best option for my collection; therefore, I have set up a Paypal account for all transactions and funds to be routed through. I am asking for your help to make this dream come alive, and as a thank you for your contribution and support I will be distributing hand made items to all backers Thank you for your continued support-please check back for updates as the year continues!
