《The Chosen One》is my first photography exhibition held in Taipei, Taiwan.
All photos were taken in India and Nepal.
Before flying to Kolkata, I had neither plan nor destination. With merely one backpack and one flight ticket, I began my one-month journey. At that time I didn't know that my self-exile to India would become a witness of Poverty, and the thrilling impact eventually turned into this collection of documentary photography.
At first, I just wanted to capture everything I saw through my camera. However, through the viewfinder, I found stories behind people's eyes.
Before traveling to India, I knew the poverty problem there is severe and has lasted for a long time. I thought daily lives in slum could be misery and grieved, but I found that my original thought was my imagination of poverty. Just like how western people view Oriental under the filter of Orientalism, it was deviate and full of discrimination.
In that month, I visited the poorest corner of every city and tried to live with the poor. Even though we spoke different languages, we still could communicate by body languages. I surprising found that they were actually optimistic. I had never hear them complain about their material lives. In this month, I had been to Kolkata, Varanasi, New Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. I met a lot of the elder and the younger with optimistic attitude. Their stories told me the vitality and beauty of living in poverty.
Although I think the problem of poverty should be solved rapidly, I was still so touched by their attutitude. After back to my country, I couldn't do anything for them, but I believed that I could let more and more people see their stories. "The Chosen One" is my personal observation; is the story about those Indian living under the proverty line.
I invite all of you to read those beautiful stories through their beautiful eyes.
