Beats, created by Interscope heads Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, started because people were listening to their music on terrible $5 ear buds. And as the brand matured and gained credibility as some of the world’s best selling headphones, they decided to use the MTV VMAs to strike a blow against anyone who doesn’t give great sound the respect it deserves. During the award show, audiences saw Serena Williams and rapper 2 Chainz utterly destroy low-quality headphones in super slow motion—putting an end to bad sound and opening the door for a brand new pair of in-ear Beats phones.
