‘Sui-generis’ stems from Sonja Bäumel’s thoughts concerning innovation in synthetic biology; clothing that could “transmute into different forms, colours and functions”. This philosophy is paired with research into a gender-neutral fashion sensibility. The two notions combine creating garments that seemingly morph, mutate, moult, merge, migrate and imitate.
The collection proposes a number of garments that are classically familiar yet distorted. This neutralises gender-specific design and allows the evolution of a hybrid garment type. A new aesthetic is appropriate for today’s non-conformist consumer who embraces innovative, expressive and informed design. The collection culminates in sophisticated streetwise day to nightwear pieces driven forward through trompe-l'œil pattern cutting and knit techniques in new hybrid realisations.
An androgynous, oversized to skinny proportion prevails throughout the collection. Fabrication balances fluid, lacquered and membrane-like qualities and a more wild and unprocessed sentiment.
