This work was part of a larger regeneration project. Working in a group, we had to develop a physically and economically feasible proposal for the redevelopment of an old paper factory in Rijeka, Croatia. The proposal considers the physical and environmental appraisal of the site, while responding to the social, cultural and economic realities of the site and city. An understanding of the historic site is demonstrated through sensitive and creative design proposals. The information was gathered during a field trip on the site. Site analysis drawings, the identification of issues, and the emerging strategy, were presented in studio. After examining the site and the various parameters affecting it, the proposal was to create film studios. We thought that this was an appropriate strategy, since the city wanted to keep its past industrial identity, but also promote a new one that would bring income and attract tourism. The good connectivity of Rijeka to the rest of the country, as well as Europe, and its diverse settings (mountains, cliffs, sea, islands) made it an ideal location for the film industry. The paper factory itself had spaces that could be adapted and appropriated to the needs of the film studios.
