The Secrets of My Youth
Sculpture by Visual Artist Grey Cross
The journey from youth to old age is a long one. We take many steps in between and in the end we are ancient, withered and merely a shell. But deep within us beats the heart of our youth and within it the magnificent garden of our life still blooms. We are seamed and worn, but every line, every detail creates the masterpiece of our individuality.
Materials & Background Information
This piece was constructed on not one but four separate 1” deep canvas of differing sizes that were put together to create the unusual shape of the overall piece. The main building components are made from dry foam and clay. Each piece was individually carved and crafted. The piece also uses moss, ceramic tile, shell, marble and sand to create the various effects. The color is created from a combination of acrylics, and metallics.
The original concept of the piece came from a desire of the artist to create a piece that represented the aged body and the worries and cares it carries with it till death.
The photo work for this sculpture was done in two parts, one during the day in the sun and the second at night using special lighting.
It took approximately 100 man hours to construct this piece.
At its widest point the canvas is 41” and 44” across. At its highest point it is 23” high. Because of the nature of the materials used, the piece weighs less than 5 pounds.
