“Kulħadd Ħalla Isem Warajh” (lit. Everyone Left a Name Behind) is the name of a book that was launched by Merlin Publishers – one of the largest book publishers in Malta.
As part of the promotion for this book a competition aimed at local illustrators was launched. A design brief that highlighted the main themes (namely women, waiting and silence) was sent to all interested candidates. After numerous brainstorming sessions and sketches I opted to create this surreal, haunting, eerie image with an abundance of empty space.
The lack of saturation except for the woman’s red hair was meant to highlight feelings of solitude, boredom and dormant passion with a hint of anticipation and hope. This submission was shortlisted and eventually placed second.
