Thesis on Bystander: Stand Up

Statement: People often are not aware of what action to take when they witness a woman being assaulted. Similarly, they are unsure how to respond when they meet a woman who has been assaulted. Design can be used to increase the capacity for a bystander to provide the victim assistance and empower them to take action.
Problem: People don’t talk about Domestic Violence in public.

Communicative medium: Tea glasses

In India it is a popular norm to gather at Tea Carts to drink tea. Most of the people drink tea from the Tea Carts when they are not home. Usually Tea Carts are located at every other street in local areas, colleges, business areas or market places. Often time tea is related with refreshment, addiction, gossip time, evening refreshment, etc. As people drink tea a lot at the Tea Carts, I thought it could be an effective place to initiate the conversation about Domestic Violence with a strong message. Tea glasses at the Tea Carts are generally clear glasses and I wanted the message to stand out rather than dissolved in the daily act of drinking tea.
Problem: Diffusion of responsibility among the bystanders.

Communicative medium: Advertisement in Movie Theater.

Due to the presence of others, the person is not pressured to take action and it is assumed that accountability of action is shared among all of those present. One of the reasons why bystanders do not intervene is that they think it might be harmful for them to interfere or it is none of their business.
Often time people ignore it or do not interfere is because they think it’s a personal matter between partners. Encountering diffusion of responsibility among the bystander and making them think about the possible actions they can take when they witness Domestic Violence.
Advertisement in Movie Theater is surprising and unexpected. The whole intention behind this advertisement was to show that Domestic Violence is not a movie, which you watch silently so speak up against it.
