Packaging Design for ORS

ORS, to be taken in case of severe dehydration or diarrhoea, is an important product in the third world countries, particularly India were such cases are frequent. ORS is a collection of necessary salts that help in regaining water lost. ORS is used by all - poor/ rich, rural/ urban, etc. Hence, working in this domain would help a larger population.

The packaging of ORS was hence taken for study to account for better user/ customer experience and fulfil their expectations better. A short survey was done based on the current options available in the market. The results were as follows:

1. Brand plays an important role, foreign brands are preferred over the local ones as they are better trustful.
2. People expect the MRP, Expiry date, Manufacturing date, Batch no. to be printed in the lower part of the packaging at the back.
3. Flavours do matter to most people and thus search for specific information regarding the same.
4. WHO mark is an important element as it is trusted by most. Rural people have a knowledge of it through the Government medical programmes organized and through advertisements.
5. Instructions are seldom read, dosage and methods of preparation are simple to understand for most.
6. Contents of the packet - concentration and composition are rarely viewed through, as people may not understand the chemical names printed.
7. People cut the sachet at random locations and hence may cause loss of certain information like the Expiry date or Batch no.

A solution for the above is what I aimed for through this project.
Features of the design include:

1. Minimalistic and clean design.
2. Reduced usage of colours - hence economical for printing
3. Brand power has been enhanced by mentioning it in necessary locations and hence imprinted in the users memory.
4. User expectations fulfilled to the most.
5. Visually understanding the flavour due to colour of packaging.
6. Readable font family - Eras used.
7. No loss of information on opening the sachet at the said location.

The following information can be printed in different vernacular languages to cater to the needs of a multilingual population as in India.
The above design is just a guideline for packaging and not an actual product.

Thank you for going through.

Kindly appreciate...

Cheers
